YOU HAVE FOUND A PIECE OF SITAR HEAVEN ON EARTH! This sitar is a most venerable master-made concert kharaj sitar made in the 1960's by a small Calcutta shop named MURCHAANA. It was restored and played regularly for many years in the most capable hands of Tony Karasek, today the only master custom sitar builder in the USA. He sold it to a music shop where we found her, and decided to give her a home for a spell.  But now it us time for us to find her a great new forever home.

It has 7 main playing strings and 13 'tarab' sympathetic strings. The varnish is a glossy deep dark chocolate brown. The body is fully carved. The carvings on the tabli (soundboard) are incredibly thick. The upper toomba (gourd resonator) is not original, but it is made of very resonant real gourd and is extra large. It has also been recently fitted with 2 extra frets which makes this sitar capable of playing chromatic melodies much easier. In India this is called "aachal thaat" (trans. "All scales").

The sitar has incredible BASS! Its lower bronze strings have been fitted with a custom reverse bridge block in front of the nut which compensates the intonation and makes the strings far more stable and sustaining when playing deep meends (pitch bends). This allows players to play notes in the ati-mandra saptak (lowest octave) with ease, and amplifies the bass tone of the whole instrument.

If you have been searching for a real vintage kharaj concert-quality sitar, THIS IS IT! And yes, it comes with a beautiful top-quality brand-new black fiberglass case.

We will be happy to provide you any practical assistance we can in getting the instrument set up properly and playing smoothly for you.

SITAR, Vintage 1960's Murchaana Masterpiece Quality Concert Kharaj Achaal Thaat, dark chocolate stain

Sitars

This sitar was made in the late 1950's, and was brought to the USA a few years ago by a student who was gifted it by her teacher in India.   It unfortunately did not make the journey safely. The main gourd was badly damaged in transit. But with great skill and patience it was pieced back together, and now she plays very nicely again.  You can tell this sitar was played quite a bit by its original owner, but the frets were all replaced at some point shortly before it was gifted.  The bone nuts and beads are original, and show their age.  She comes with her original vinyl-covered, 'form fit' fiberboard case.

This sitar has 7 main playing strings and 13 sympathetic 'tarab' strings, which were all replaced recently. It has plenty of vintage-quality sound, rather delicate and a little dark around the edges. It plays very smoothly.  We are committed to making sure you are able to get as much out of this instrument as possible.  Please contact us if you have any questions at all.

Traditional Mbira from the Shona Tribe of Zimbabwe, a very specific instrument within the broader category of Kalimba, or thumb-piano. Mbira culture is rich with traditional repertoire, dance, and ceremony that last through the night. The sound is enchanting, entrancing, delightful and unique.

This one is tuned to nyamaropa tuning, they are easily tunable by tapping the tongues in and out of the bracing.

Along the bottom of the instrument you'll see the metal sizzles that buzz while you play, to ward off bad spirits! These are very special instruments, hand made and brought personally by a friend of ours. We hope you enjoy!

Jia Senghe has been playing, teaching, and making traditional Zen Shakuhachi flute in Chicago for many years.  This particular flute is a great beginner shakuhachi made by Mr. Senghe. It is an easy flute to get a tone going, which is very helpful when first learning.

This flute has Ro, or the root note, tuned to D. The notes on Shakuhachi are Ro, Tsu, Re, Chi, Ha, and I, which make a minor pentatonic scale (for this flute - D, F, G, A, C), though the music often calls for bending the notes for pitches in-between.

The flute comes with an instructional booklet by Mr. Senghe.

Shakuhachi Flutes

Jia Senghe has been playing, teaching, and making traditional Zen Shakuhachi flute in Chicago for many years.  This is a lovely Shakuhachi includes the Bamboo's root end - this makes for a narrowing in the bore at the end of the instrument, which improves the intonation. Root ends also have a great aesthetic value and honor the spirit of the Bamboo.

This flute has Ro, or the root note, tuned to C#. The notes on Shakuhachi are Ro, Tsu, Re, Chi, Ha, and I, which make a minor pentatonic scale (for this flute - C#, E, F#, G#, B), though the music often calls for bending the notes for pitches in-between.

This is the letter the legendary conga maker Tom Alexander sent along with this masterpiece conga drum:

"This Natural Fusion model Volcano Percussion "Conga" is made out of "Opium" wood as we call it here. Actually called Opiuma in Hawaiian for resemblance to seeds of the Opium of Commerce. Not related to the drug. Grows in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, as well as Mexico and a lot of other places.

The wood was introduced to me as an experiment recently and this will definitely be a "one of a kind". This wood does not like to bend, which is the basis of traditional tumbadora making. I lost as many staves as it took to make this drum. I wouldn't give up because this was a preplanned gift and the wood colors were just what I wanted for her. Apparently no one had ever given her a conga drum and there is no one more deserving...

I am very happy with the results. It was hard to let go of. As for the sound, it is exceptional. Warm but very bright, just like my wife. I put an excellent .060 Texas bullhide on it knowing it will last forever and give all the tonal ranges in one drum. The inside is finished as usual and the outside has got 9 coats of UV filtered clear polymer finish, same as my car. It's also got more chrome than my car."

This drum has it all: handmade from top to bottom, solid steel hardware, bottom rubber ring protection, hand-sanded 'no glue lines' finished interior, this is as boutique as a conga can be.

This is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece signed by the maker himself. It is in almost perfect new condition, save for a couple tiny lug bumps. It is flawless, and really sounds amazing. Volcano drums are made in Hawaii, and are only usually available by custom direct order. They are some of the most expensive congas you can buy in the whole world. We have just this one 11.75" conga available, and we believe the price we are asking is a bit high for a pro conga drum, but very fair considering all factors. Make us an offer, we'd like very much to find this lonely drum a new home soon!

Compact sized Darbuka, handcrafted in Chicago by Q Drums. These drums are played internationally by professionals and Darbuka fanatics!

In the final photo, you will see a size comparison with the extra large Sumbati-sized drum.

Welded and hammered from sheet steel, Q Drums are resonant, indestructible, and surprisingly lightweight. This drum will last you a lifetime. A large radiused head makes the drum very comfortable on the hands, natural tung oil finish protects the steel from rusting.

Darbuka can be played many ways, but traditionally rests comfortably across the lap. The drum can also be slung over the shoulder with a scarf or strap, rigged into a drum kit, or on a floor stand. Darbuka technique offers a huge range of sounds and possibilities, but the learning curve is small - beginners and advanced players will all appreciate!

Quentin Shaw has studied drumming extensively in North Africa. Shaw has a discerning and specific taste for the sound of Darbuka, which goes into every drum he makes. To quote he "knows when a drum will sound great before even putting the skin on."
